Shooting with Dj Sindi Halfrats

Many times and places ago, somewhere around 1999 when I still used a fake ID for 18+ shows, a friend invited me to see a band called Mindless Self Indulgence at the Continental on 3rd Avenue in the East Village. Although little has changed in the nearly three decades since, it took even less arm twisting to get me to a punk show at a dive bar in the halcyon days of my youth. Turned out to be Mindless Self Indulgence wasn’t really my jam. Thankfully, they were only the openers for The Lunachicks. Of course in my under 18 hubris, I was pretty sure that I knew every punk ever to exist in all time and space ever, but how did I not know of this amazing band of tough as shit women who fucking rocked? Ah, youth.

Fast forward a few decades and career and continent changes, I began selling my jewelry at the absolutely fabulous Homebody Boutique in Brooklyn. Sindi (current DJ Sindi Halfrats + Corporate Plants Band, ex Lunachicks) was both a client and friend of the very lovely owner, Kate. And, as it turned out, also an enthusiast of my work. We became Instagram buddies (the app sometimes brings about actual good) and eventually met IRL in Berlin a few years ago. Turned out to be we were pretty big fans of one another.

Over the subsequent years we have batted around ideas of various jewelry and photo collaborations, with life and the Atlantic Ocean always getting in the way. This March, we managed to be in the same city at the same time with the same schedule openings and we finally made it happen. The day was cold, the sun was bright, and we were stealing shots in a very famous and beautiful Brooklyn cemetery that cannot be named for legal reasons.

Hopefully this will be the first of many future warmer collaborations. Moral of the story: Sometimes it’s OK to meet your icons.

Stay Awesome!

XoXo,
Anna
